Howard's Bookstore is located in the center of downtown Torrington, CT in the Meara Building next to the Naugatuck River. Formerly the town's go-to shoe store for more than 50 years, Howard's shut down in 1993 due to the continuing decline in downtown retail and rise in big chain stores in malls and shopping centers. The former shoe store sat abandoned and empty for almost three decades, with shoes and memories left behind by the former owners.
In 2020, acclaimed artist John Noelke of the former Noelke Gallery on 15 Water Street purchased the building. The three-story building (with a basement to make it four) houses thousands of used books, horse saddles, local artwork, and shoes for sale. Howard's is a hub for local musicians, artists, and writers, featuring performances, book talks, jam sessions, open mic nights, and other events for all to enjoy.
